In October 1998 Matthew Sheppard was kidnapped, beaten, tied to a fence and left to die... because he was gay.
As the whole world watched, hate was redefined by courage and beauty.
The Laramie Project is a play by Moises Kaufman and members of the Tectonic Theatre Project. The play is about the reaction to the 1998 murder of University of Wyoming student, Matthew Shepard, in Laramie, Wyoming.
The play draws on hundreds of interviews, conducted by the theatre company, with inhabitants of the town. The project also draws on company members' own journal entries and published news reports. It is divided into three acts, with eight actors portraying more than sixty characters in a series of short scenes.
